چکیده

This paper describes the development of “MaskBot 2i” (codenamed: Kabuto), a robotic head designed for research into Human-Robot-Interactions. The uniqueness of our new robotic head is that the appearance of its face can be alter on-the-fly. Different faces can be projected onto the active head system. The head is fully active with a 3-DOF neck, with support for biannual hearing as well as video camera for seeing. An interchangeable face is the main feature of this new Mask-Bot, the head can be equipped with an average face mask as well as a highly customised individualised face that can be easily exchanged. Additionally, the actuation of the head has been designed to match the natural head movements of an average human. Thus, enabling the head and face to be articulated synchronously to the speech production while the natural head movement matches that of the animated face. The design and realisation of this new system is presented in details in this paper.

"Mask-bot": A life-size robot head using talking head animation for human-robot communication

In this paper, we introduce our life-size talking head robotic system, “Mask-bot”, developed as a platform to support and accelerate human-robot communication research. The “Mask-bot” hardware consists of a semi-transparent plain mask, a portable LED projector with a fish-eye conversion lens mounted behind the mask, a pan-tilt unit and a mounting base. The hardware is driven by a software anima...

"mask-bot" - a life-size talking head animated robot for AV speech and human-robot communication research

In this paper we introduce our life-size talking head robotic system, Mask-bot, developed to support human-robot communication research. A robotic head using projected animated faces

This paper presents a setup which employs virtual animated agents for robotic heads. The system uses a laser projector to project animated faces onto a three dimensional face mask. This approach of projecting animated faces onto a three dimensional head surface as an alternative to using flat, two dimensional surfaces, eliminates several deteriorating effects and illusions that come with flat s...

Migration from full‐head mask to “open‐face” mask for immobilization of patients with head and neck cancer

To provide an alternative device for immobilization of the head while easing claustrophobia and improving comfort, an "open-face" thermoplastic mask was evaluated using video-based optical surface imaging (OSI) and kilovoltage (kV) X-ray radiography. A three-point thermoplastic head mask with a precut opening and reinforced strips was developed. After molding, it provided sufficient visible fac...

Effects of 3D Shape and Texture on Gender Identification for a Retro-Projected Face Screen

Retro-projected face displays have recently appeared as an alternative to mechanical robot faces, and stand apart by virtue of their flexibility: they are able to present a variety of faces varying in both realism and individual appearance. Here we examine the role of both 3D mask structure and texture image quality on the perception of gender in one such platform, the Mask-bot. In our experime...
